5 Resources
5.1 What books discuss bullseye shooting?
The one book that practically
every bullseye shooter has on his shelf is
The Pistol Shooter's Treasury
published by Gil Hebard. The
Treasury is a collection of articles written
by some of the best shooters ever to compete in bullseye. It covers a wide range
of topics, including detailed articles on training. And it's cheap! The Hebard
catalog lists it for US$5.95. The
Treasury's only problem is that it's
somewhat dated; most of the articles were written in the 1960s. The list below
contains some other titles mentioned on the list. I have condensed the posted
opinions (where available), with names deleted to protect the innocent.
- Competitive Shooting, by A. A. Yur'Yev
- Covers international rifle and pistol competition, but useful for bullseye
shooters. Available from the NRA
- Pistol Shooting, by Laslo Antal and Ragnar Skanaker
- Available from Neal Johnson's
Gunsmithing, Inc (Note: the website isn't all that useful if you don't
have a paper catalog.)
- Successful Pistol Shooting, by Bob Hickey and Art Sievers
- Contains some useful information, but probably not enough to justify its
$50 price tag. Repetitive and strangely formatted.
Here are some other
titles on the subject of mental training that have been mentioned or recommended
by listmembers. As of this writing all the listed titles are available from
Amazon.com. No endorsement implied, it's just
the on-line bookstore I use the most.
- Zen and the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel
- Written by a German philosopher who studied Zen with a community of
Bhuddist monks in Japan.
- Successful Coaching by Rainer Martens
- Focused on developing the coaching skills in the reader, but may be useful
for developing self-coaching skills.
- The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey
- A very approachable introduction to mental training. Covers the basics of
visualization.

This is by no means a comprehensive list. Many other companies offer useful
equipment, but very few specialize in supplying the bullseye shooter.
5.4 What gunsmiths specialize in building bullseye guns?
The following
list is quite short, and doesn't come close to a comprehensive list of bullseye
pistolsmiths. The aforementioned John Dreyer maintains a longer list, so I'm not
too motivated to expand this one. Of course, appearance on this list doesn't
constitute any kind of endorsement - I wish I had a pistol from each of these
people, but I'm not that lucky.
If you want to be included on the list, please send mail to the FAQ maintainer. More gunsmiths of various types
are listed on the American
Pistolsmith's Guild website.

Seniors champion who one two or three times after I reworked his pistol.

5.5 Where do I find out about matches?
Shooting Sports USA, the NRA
Competition Division's monthly newsletter, contains national match listings. It
also contains feature articles on various shooting sports. You can subscribe to
SSUSA by calling the NRA at (703)267-1000. The NRA also provides information on
state championships, sectionals and regionals on its website at
http://www.nra.org/competitions/events.html
The Texas State Rifle Association transcribes match schedules from SSUSA and
makes them available on the web: http://www.tsra.com/NRA_Sub.htm
If you're looking for a quick source of information on local matches, try
calling ranges and clubs. Any club or range that hosts bullseye matches will
direct you to the appropriate person.
5.6 Where can I get a rulebook?
John Dreyer provides an
online
version of the rulebook.
Rulebooks are available from the NRA by calling 1-800-336-7402. The
Conventional Pistol rulebook is stock #CP16650. The Competitions Division also
offers a number of other
items including scoring aids and temporary scorebooks.
